Celebrating the Annual Day of London Academy of Dravidian Arts (LADA)

Kalaaravam 2024, the annual day celebration of the esteemed London Academy of Dravidian Arts (LADA) School, was nothing short of spectacular, blending rhythm, grace and cultural richness into an unforgettable evening. Held at the Auditorium of Little Ilford School, Manor Park on Sunday 30th June 2024, the event showcased the exceptional talents of LADA students and artists from the wider community, drawing an enthusiastic crowd of parents and art aficionados.

The evening commenced with the traditional lighting of the lamp by the honourable MP Stephen Timms, long-term MAUK sponsor Sheeba Kumar from Swayam Property Services Ltd and distinguished teachers Vinod Navadara and Jasline Shimmy Antony, setting a serene tone for the evening.

Following this, Ajitha Sajeev (compere) gracefully shifted the audience’s attention to the upcoming performances, eloquently building anticipation for the spectacular displays of talent that lay ahead.

The performances included graceful Mohiniyattam, vibrant fusion dances, captivating semi-classical pieces, sensational singing, endearing keyboard playing, energetic folk dances and evocative performance poetry.

The phenomenal array of traditional Bharathanatyam performances by LADA students and local talents were the highlights of the evening, each with intricate footwork, expressive gestures and vivid facial expressions. Dancers as young as 6, were adorned in traditional attire, captivating everyone with their synchronised movements and contagious smiles.

A charming segment featured at the event was a keyboard performance by two LADA beginner students, who delighted the audience with a simple yet heartfelt melody/melodies.

Another standout feature of the evening was the Chenda performance by LADA students, which brought a vibrant and dynamic energy to the event. The performers dressed in traditional attire, played the Chenda with remarkable precision and intensity. The rhythmic patterns and thunderous beats created an exhilarating atmosphere, captivating the audience with their sheer force and intricacy.

The event was made even more special by a surprise visit from MAUK’s long-time supporter, Sir Stephen Timms, MP for East Ham. During his speech, Sir Timms congratulated the young artists on their outstanding performances and commended MAUK for its efforts in preserving and promoting Dravidian culture and heritage in London.

MAUK Kalaaravam 2024 was graced by two distinguished guests from Kerala: Gopinath Muthukad, the world-renowned magician, whose extraordinary presence brought an air of enchantment to the evening, and I. M. Vijayan, the celebrated Indian footballer, whose inspirational aura added significance to the gathering.

Kalaaravam beautifully encapsulated the essence of the school’s mission: to foster a love for Dravidian classical arts while encouraging innovation and creativity.

Sreejith Sreedharan (MAUK chairperson), in his closing speech, expressed heartfelt gratitude to the teachers, students and parents for their unwavering support and hard work. He highlighted the importance of preserving and promoting Dravidian classical arts and how events like the Kalaaravam play a crucial role in keeping these traditions alive.

The success of Kalaaravam showcased the talent and dedication of the students, as well as the tireless efforts of the teachers and volunteers. Their meticulous planning and coordination were commendable. This event not only celebrated artistic excellence but also reinforced the cultural heritage that LADA passionately upholds.
