It is a tool for education and for engaging communities beyond boundaries of culture. Creative tools help the public to understand and explore community values in a better manner. This lecture-demonstration will focus on some key aspects of Indian classical dance, Bharatanatyam in particular. We hope to share our 1.We begin with a short performance. 2.A brief explanation of the importance of hand gestures and facial expression. 3.Rasa as the basis of art in India. – With a demo of the Navarasa or nine basic / universal emotions 4.Bhagavatamela – the dance -theatre tradition as an example of community engagement. 5.The dancer-audience relationship as an element of community engagement. 6.Thematic presentations as a tool for education / awareness. 7.Working with marginalized communities and dance as rehabilitative therapy.
